Appliances and Furniture
The assembly of modern home appliances (refrigerators, freezers, ovens, dishwashers, air conditioners, etc) requires the bonding of a host of materials (metal, plastic, glass, etc). Nearly all product designs now benefit from the application of adhesives to join dissimilar materials, eliminate point bond stress concentrations and provide tight moisture seals.
Other significant advantages of adhesives are that these materials have viscoelastic properties and can cope with different thermal expansion coefficient between materials in a product, for instance an oven. The substitution of mechanical fasteners may also make the product more corrosive-resistant (e.g. protection from the use of detergents in a washer), reduce labour and material costs and improve assembly times.
The global market for electric household appliances is projected to reach 1.5 billion units by 2020, driven by high replacement demand and a growing affluence of the middle-class population in emerging markets. Furthermore, manufacturers are focusing on developing smart and autonomous products by integrating sensors, intelligent electronic control and machine programming concepts. The adhesive (and bonding technology) market has a very positive outlook as result of this growing, global appliance market.
Bonding solutions for manufacturing furniture (chairs, cabinets, shelves, beds, etc) must provide strong, long lasting material joints that are able to withstand high loads and allow for appealing aesthetics. In many products, adhesives are used in every step of the manufacturing process and can account for up to 30% of the total production cost. For instance, the plywood may be the main components of wood furniture and are engineered materials using cross-laminated veneer which is bonded with durable, moisture-resistant adhesives (and heat). The plywood is fabricated into a design and surface laminated, to improve durability and finishing, through various adhesive products.
Adhesives & Bonding Expo Europe will provide executives, engineers and purchasing and procurement professionals with the latest bonding solutions for appliances and furniture applications.
